Linux Operating System
The Linux operating system is essential to the reliability of our robots and IT systems. Motion Design embraced this open-source movement early and has now been a Linux user for several years. We have found Linux to be extremely reliable and capable. Our robots run a hard real-time version of Linux called RTLinux. This is the only operating system that we have found to be reliable enough for machine control.
RT Controller
Motion Design has long been an advocate for the use of computers in machine control. The advantages a PC has over a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) are quite significant. Over the years we have finally achieved our goal of creating a robust industrial controller based on a PC. Motion Design's RT Controller raises the performance of your machine by allowing IT functions to be performed.
Our controller can simultaneously control the machine while also processing data, read from files, write to files, or transfer files over ethernet. All this happens in a guaranteed real-time fashion using RTLinux. The controller hardware is based on embedded industrial PC technology with solid state drives. There are many options for interfacing with external devices. For example, it can interface with barcode readers, various industrial devices via modbus, devicenet, CANOpen, ASCII or ASi. Almost anything is possible. If you have a specific requirement, we would be happy to incorporate it.
